Adam Kreek: Olympian talks diet

August 24, 2008 on 7:30 am | In Uncategorized | Comments Off

Adam Kreek is an Olympian who seems to watch his diet more than Michael Phelps. Anyway, here isan Adam Kreek daily diet.

This includes a couple of things I had never heard of before: Eload and Quinoa. Also interesting is how he measures his water - I always thought you just drank whatever you wanted when it came to water. Especially since the guy takes creatine - usually that means drinkign more water…

More sex = less muscle growth?

We all know that testosterone means bigger muscles. That’s why women who exercise a ton don’t look like Arnold (thoguh they can take steroids for more testosterone and more muscles) and why bodybuilders (yes, Arnold too) take steroids and other supplements to boost testosterone levels.

Now most guys don’t need to look like Mr Olympia, but we do want big muscles so we go workout and eat lots of protein and whatnot. Enter this thread where at least one person who seems to know what he’s talking about suggests that orgasms might mean smaller muscles: “Teststosterone levels peak in males who have abstained from orgasm for 7 days.”

NFL football player goes “vegan

This article talks about Tony Gonzalez and his neo-vegan diet. This includes fish and chicken so it’s clearly not vegan or even vegetarian, but anyway he doesn’t eat beef. They really don’t give much information on his diet unfortunately. Gonzalez says the diet is working well:

“It’s unbelievable how good I feel,” Gonzalez said. “Seriously, my recovery is so much better than it’s ever been, and my endurance is tremendous. The best part is that during games I really don’t get tired. I have more focus, too. I’m even staying awake in meetings.”

I guess we wait for his book to come out to learn the secret.

Michael Phelps’ diet controversy

August 14, 2008 on 7:57 am | In Uncategorized | Comments Off

There’s a thread on just about every fitness forum now about Michael Pelps’ diet. This New York Post article makes most of us pretty jealous:

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase “Breakfast of Champions” by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.

He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Now all bodybuilders know that to bulk up you need more calories than you use, and there’s no doubt that Phelps burns ridiculous numbers of calories swimming fast and furious. But still, a whole pizza plus a pound of pasta for dinner? This CBS news article quotes a nutritionist who calls BS and guesses that Phelps eats more like 6,000 calories on a typical day.

Personally, I also find it hard to believe that Phelps eats as described every day. But there’s no way I’m going to believe a wild guess from a nutritionist who probably has no idea what it’s like to eat a high-calorie diet while doing intensive training.
